Exhaust System: Where’s that Leak coming from?

Any of these symptoms sound familiar? If your vehicle is running poorly, the check engine light stays on, and there seems to be unusually loud noises coming from the muffler, chances are your vehicle may have a leak in the exhaust system. Even if you can’t smell the leak, try to pin-point it so you can call your auto mechanic to have it repaired before more serious problems occur.

If you are looking for quality Exhaust Systems Billings MT than your search can be over now with our Precision Auto Repair Billings MT shop. Also find Vehicle Maintenance Billings MT mechanic to solve your car problems.

Here are some easy steps in doing a self-check of your vehicle’s exhaust system:

   1. Keep the car cool while you search for the leak. As the car heats up, metal expands, which can cause small leaks to get smaller, making them difficult to detect.

   2. Ask a friend to temporarily cover the tailpipe to force the exhaust through any leaks. Feel for leaks (hot air escaping through the pipe) by running your hand near the exhaust system. Be careful not to touch the tailpipe.

   3. Inspect the exhaust pipe where it bends over the rear axle, as this is a common area for cracks and leaks to occur.

   4. Start your inspection at the engine and follow the exhaust system all the way to the end of the tail pipe. Thoroughly check all connectors along the way, as these areas commonly have leaks.

   5. Inspect the exhaust manifold for cracking. This may require simply removing the plastic engine cover to expose the exhaust system and engine. Cracking and warping of the manifold is quite common, especially with older cars.

   6. Check the gaskets. This tends to a common cause of leaks. If you have an older car, the gasket connecting the manifold to the cylinder head may have cracked during normal use. Again, you will feel hot air escaping rapidly as well as a strong smell of fumes if there is a leak.

   7. Touch rusty areas on pipes and mufflers to see whether the rust is just on the surface, or if it goes all the way through the part. Areas weakened by rust often cause leaks.

After you have made a minor inspection, it’s time to take your car to a specialized mechanic. Most auto shops will run tests on the exhaust system free of charge and then recommend the appropriate service..

Transmission Service – Is Your Vehicle Shifty?

For those vehicle owners who are not mechanics, a transmission service can be one of the most mysterious and frustrating of automotive repair. Transmission repair can also be expensive especially if you prolong having the vehicle checked out by a professional. It can even be dangerous if your transmission fails.

If you are looking for Air Conditioner Service Billings MT than find our dedicated Automotive Repair Billings MT shop. Our expert mechanic also provides Transmission Service Billings MT .

If something is starting to go wrong with your transmission, it likely that your vehicle will alert you with shifting problems and usually a check engine light will appear. When these things happen, it’s time to take your vehicle into an auto technician as soon as possible if you do not want to cause more serious problems to your vehicle by postponing a transmission service. Most vehicles should be checked and serviced twice a year. This maintenance check-up should consist of changing filters and filling up the level of transmission fluid and will usually prevent a major transmission repair.

In addition to a regular scheduled transmission service, drivers should be careful to avoid hard accelerations and try to eliminate friction while shifting. Even after doing all these things, transmissions wear out and fail, it’s just the nature of automobiles.

When a transmission service or a transmission repair is not enough, your mechanic may suggest that the entire transmission may need to be rebuilt or replaced. This is not something that the typical vehicle owner can accomplish. You might be able to check for leaks or a clogged filter, but this should only be done in order to provide needed information to your mechanic. So, be a wise vehicle owner and take your vehicle to a transmission repair center and leave it in the trained and skilled hands of a trusted professional.

    * Windshield Visability - Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly. Use cold weather washer fluid and consider winter wiper blades. It may be time replace them, as typically, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.

    * Engine Tune-up - If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done before winter sets in. Winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling.

    * Tires & Alignment - Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. Consider special tires designed to grip the slick roads caused by rain, snow and ice. Now’s the time to check the wheel alignment too.

    * Brakes – Inspect the braking system, a vehicle’s most important safety component.

    * Exhaust System - Inspect for carbon monoxide leaks, especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed.

    * Exterior Lighting – Visually check to see that exterior and interior lights work and headlights are properly aimed so that you can see and be seen.

    * Oil Change – Dirty oil can spell trouble in cold weather. Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals. Consider changing to “winter weight” oil. Check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.

Brake Rotors Replacement – Turn down the Heat!

Every time you hit the brakes, all that energy you built up by stamping down on the throttle is converted into friction and heat and—snap—you slow down and come to a stop. This process is repeated hundreds of times without much thought, whether it’s on a run to the supermarket or a road trip. Over time the friction and heat created by the brake pads clamping down on the rotors actually wears down the metal surface of the rotor, and problems arise, possibly leading to the brake rotors replacement.

Too Thin For Comfort

If you are looking for Brake Rotors Billings MT than your search can be over now with our Precision Auto Repair Billings MT shop. Find Brake Repair Billings MT services for safe driving.

When a rotor gets too thin it loses its ability to channel heat away from the braking process and it overheats. The combination of too thin and too hot is a bad oner. Overheating brakes can cause a myriad of problems with your braking system. Pads get too hot and produce gases that cause your brakes to fade. Rotors will warp and discolor as they overheat. Worst of all, brake fluid can boil and total loss of braking can occur.

Things Get Bent Out Of Shape

A perfect rotor is smooth and flat like a dinner plate. When it becomes warped it looks more like a wavy potato chip. The measure of this flatness is called run-out, and a difference as small as .001 of an inch off center can be felt in the brake pedal. If consistently overheated, rotors can become scored with deep scars.
Brake Rotors Replacement

If you’re feeling a vibrating sensation when stepping on the brakes, schedule a brake inspection, which likely will result in brake rotors replacement. The first thing the mechanic will measure is the rotor’s minimum thickness. The next thing they will inspect is the run-out. If the rotor is within specifications it may be resurfaced and then reinstalled. If any of the measurements are beyond specifications, it must be replaced.

Don’t be tempted to skimp or to cut corners on brakes. It could be the worst and last decision you will ever make. When in doubt, the safest strategy is replacement. A benefit of brake rotors replacement is saving time. Removing them and getting them checked and turned can use up hours of your time. Even though brake rotors replacement is not considered a major mechanical repair, it’s money well spent for safety and peace of mind.

Car Battery Basics – Not so shocking after all!

The car battery, basically a lead-acid storage compartment, is an electrochemical component producing voltage to the electrical components of the vehicle. When the battery continues to be recharged, it will give many years of service, preventing a premature car battery replacement. While cranking, the battery also supplies additional current more than what the alternator can supply, thus acting as an electrical reservoir.

If you are looking for quality car battery Billings MT services than your search can be over with our Precision Automotive Repair Billings MT shop. Also find Alternators Billings MT service.

The car battery requires precautionary measures while handling. The electrolyte (water) inside the battery is a mixture of sulfuric acid and water. Sulfuric acid is very corrosive and is dangerous if it gets in contact with skin or clothing. Batteries also emit hydrogen gas. Because of this, it is extremely important to keep away from flames and sparks.

A car battery is rated in CCA (cold cranking amps). This represents the current that the battery can produce for 30 seconds at 0 degrees before the battery voltage drops below 7.2 volts. An average battery today will have a CCA of 500. With the many different makes and models of cars available today, batteries come in many different sizes and CCA’s. When you need a car battery replacement, be certain to purchase the proper battery for your vehicle.

Even a maintenance free car battery requires periodic inspection and cleaning to insure it stays in good working order. Inspect the battery to see that it is clean and that it is held securely in its carrier. Some corrosion naturally collects around the battery. Electrolyte condensation contains corrosive sulfuric acid, which eats away the metal battery terminals, cable ends and battery cradles. If your vehicle battery is corroded be sure to clean it properly to keep the battery operating at its optimum efficiency. This will provide you with a dependable mode of transportation, as well as prevent an inconvenient car battery replacement.

Engine Repair: Is an Engine Rebuild Really Necessary?

So, you thought your vehicle just needed a simple engine service? But, you heard the frightening words, you need an engine rebuild! You may be asking, are you sure? There are a number of reasons for this type of engine repair:

    * Worn components, such as connecting rods, crankshaft, pistons, bearings or seals;
    * Lack of oil, or dirty oil destroying bearings over time; or
    * Over-revving, which can break a connecting rod and cause other problems.

If you are looking for Engine Repair Billings MT services than meet our Auto Repair Shop Billings MT mechanic at Precision Automotive. Also find Car Battery Replacement Billings MT to save your vehicle from transmission problems.

How involved is an Engine Rebuild?

The first step is removing the motor from the vehicle. After that, it means disassembling the engine, cleaning the parts, machining the crankshaft, and cleaning up the bores. Then, it is reassembled with the same pistons and rods after replacing the bearings and rings with new ones. However, if any of the other components are beyond repair, they will also be replaced.

How expensive is it?

Rebuilding an engine is generally fairly expensive, depending on the car. Costs for rebuilding an engine include machine shop costs, any new parts, removal and re-installation of the engine as well as the many hours of labor required. Make sure to ask for an estimate.

How long will it take?

It usually takes at least several full days of work to remove an engine, rebuild it, and then reinstall it, depending upon the complexity of the engine service required.

Can I do it myself?

While it is possible for the amateur mechanic to do simple engine repair, it is not a job that should be taken lightly. There are many specialized tools that are needed, from a hoist to tools for assembling the internal parts of the motor. Because engines are built to extremely high tolerances, any major discrepancies in an engine repair, can result in an inefficient running vehicle, if it runs at all. Generally, a major engine service is something that should be left to an experienced mechanic.

Car Maintenance Part II -- The top 10 Most Expensive Car Repairs!

As you may recall, last month we listed the first 5 of the 10 most expensive car problems and repairs. We also provided tips for good car maintenance and suggested solutions for those problems (read our August 18th blog). Remember, taking care to follow the manufacturer’s recommended schedule for vehicle maintenance will help avoid more costly repairs. As with life in general, so it is with car maintenance--taking care of small problems early on will avoid a much bigger problem somewhere down the road!

If you are looking for quality Car Maintenance Billings MT than your search can be over with our Precision Auto Repair Billings MT shop. Also find Muffler Billings MT service.

Here we continue with #6 - 10 of the most expensive car repairs and the steps you can take to prevent them.

6. Camshaft Replacement – The camshaft controls how your engine takes in air by operating the valves within a vehicle's engine, pressing down and forcing them open. Failing to change your oil often enough, or using low-quality fuel, could be the cause of camshaft failure due to the buildup on valves. Preventing this failure is easy: Have an oil change service and the valves adjusted on a regular basis.

7. Spark Plugs and Cylinder Head - Trouble with spark plugs usually causes an engine to misfire, which then causes the cylinder to heat up. A good indication that your engine is having problems is that the “check-engine light” will come on. If you hesitate in getting a vehicle maintenance performed, the catalytic converter may be further damaged, so don’t hesitate getting your vehicle to an auto repair shop for service.

8. Transmission – The engine transfers power to the transmission and makes the wheels go round. A lot of people overlook the transmission because the engine itself is more prevalent. Transmission problems can be happening without any visible warning signs. You may be entitled for free transmission repair if you can stay on top of technical service bulletins from your vehicle’s manufacturer.

9. Hybrid Inverter – Compared to gasoline powered counterparts, hybrids are still fairly scarce on the roads. The hybrid inverter changes direct-current power to alternating-current. Thankfully, the inverter doesn’t fail very often, because it is very expensive to replace. You should consider purchasing an additional warranty when purchasing a hybrid as it is difficult to prevent an inverter failure due to no warning signs other than the check-engine light on the dashboard.

10.Cylinder - The biggest of all problems is cylinder failure, usually due to neglect of the motor. Without the proper mixture of air, fuel, and spark, the temperatures can get too hot in the cylinder. Cylinder parts are pricey, and labor even makes it more costly because the mechanic has to disassemble the engine to replace the cylinder. Rather than get their vehicle repaired, many vehicle owners my decide to trade for another vehicle altogether.

Oil Change Quiz: It’s back to school time about oil changes!

With summer over, it’s back to school time! Take this oil change quiz and find out how much you know about oil changes. Even though oil changes seem so fundamental, they are one of the most important parts of regular car care.

If you are looking for quality Oil Changes Billings MT than your search can be over now with our Precision Auto Repair Billings MT shop. Also find Transmission Service Billings MT to solve transmission problems.

What is the correct interval between oil changes?

Because today’s driving conditions meet the definition of “severe,” vehicle owners’ manuals will typically recommend an oil change  every 3,000 miles or 90 days, in conjunction with a filter change.
What are “severe” driving conditions?

    * Trips less than 10 miles
    * Driving in dust and sand
    * Cold weather that prevents motor warm-up
    * Extended idling
    * Stop-and-go driving
    * Pulling trailers and heavy loads
    * Heavy duty driving, such as sustaining high-speeds in hot weather.

How does an Oil Filter get clogged?

When the filter begins to break down, the function, which is to "sift" or remove solid contaminants, will lose its effectiveness. This restricts the flow of oil and also allows contaminants to enter the engine lubricating areas. As the contaminants flow around the filter element, called "by-passing," contaminants return to the engine, resulting in damage to the moving parts of the engine, plus speeding up the formation of sludge.
Does it matter what size of filter I use?

The effectiveness of a filter is directly related to its size. Through the 1980’s, most auto and light truck filters held approximately a quart of oil. Since then, filters now will barely hold half a quart. The filter fills with contaminants, and then it bypasses.

How does “sludge” form?

If oil change services are ignored long enough, contamination (blow-by, condensation, fuel, dust, metallic shavings, anti-freeze) will mix into the oil, oxidizing (or baking), thereby clogging the filter.

A Thought to Remember: Just a few minutes of your time and a few dollars every three months or 3,000 miles will help keep dollars in your wallet and your vehicle running smoothly down the road.

Brake Repair: Do your Brakes need a Break?

The brakes of our vehicle work hundreds of times each day and we don’t think too much about them until all of a sudden they don’t seem to stop our car efficiently. Are you confident in the stopping power of your car? At a crucial moment, are you and your family going to be able to stop in time? How will you know if they require new brake pads, rotors, or some other form of brake replacement

With today’s busy schedules, many vehicle owners will start out and not even think about the performance of their brakes. Give them a break and have them regularly checked by a brake repair specialist.  This inspection typically involves removing all four tires and wheels to inspect the pads and rotors for wear.

If you are looking for Brakes Repair Billings MT than your search can be over now with our Precision Brake Replacement Billings MT services. Find Auto Repair Services Billings MT services for safe driving.

3 components that could fail --

Pads -- The alloys used in pads and rotors are sometimes very specific. The wrong pads can mean significant damage to rotors and other vital parts. Your vehicle should only receive the pads and other components that are specifically engineered for it.

Rotors -- The pads are just half of the relationship–without properly serviced rotors, your car will not stop as it
should. At some point in time, every rotor should be resurfaced according to manufacturer specifications and lubricated properly to make sure the pads get the maximum durability. These steps can make a major difference in your car’s braking performance.

Fluid – This is an often overlooked component of the brake system. The “quantity” is generally checked, but the “quality” is often overlooked. It can become dirty and create problems if it’s supposed to be flowing smoothly to the calipers to stop your car. Clean, new fluid can help extend the life of your entire brake system and save you money on a costly brake repair or brake replacement in the future.

When you have a brake repair performed as needed, you will have peace of mind that your vehicle will perform in the manner that is required to keep you and your family safe.

Car Service Part I ? Avoid 5 of the most expensive Car Repairs!

As you already know, cars require regular maintenance, just like many other things in life. If you forget to check the air pressure in your tires, ignore the “check-engine” light, or delay a routine car service, you could be headed for an inconvenient and costly car repair. Car repair professionals have advised that the way to avoid the most common and expensive car repair is to determine the type of problems early before they get any bigger.Part I of II –Five of the 10 most expensive car repairs and how to avoid them:

If you are looking for quality Car Repair Billings MT services than your search can be over with our Precision Auto Repair Shop Billings MT shop. Also find Wheel Alignment Billings MT service.

1. Injection Pump – An injection pump is the device that delivers fuel into the engine’s cylinders. A clogged pump is relatively common, and the car repair costs can vary widely. By following your car service schedule and changing the fuel filters on a regular basis, your fuel pump should stay clog-free,

2. Hybrid Battery -- A hybrid battery, which is charged by an integrated motor-assist battery, can be overly-taxed in hot weather. Because Hybrid technology is fairly new, it can be difficult to troubleshoot problems. Avoid a costly car repair by driving Hybrids in milder climates.

3. Catalytic Converter -- Catalytic converters detoxify exhaust emissions and are built to last for years. However, you will see some warning signs when they begin to fail, broken oxygen sensors and misfires (when fuel catches fire as it passes through the engine). The parts are more expensive than the labor, as they contain platinum, palladium and rhodium.

4. Torque Converter Assembly -- The torque converter assembly is a hydraulic coupling between the transmission and the engine. It makes sure an automatic-transmission vehicle comes to a full stop without stalling. When the torque converter overheats, it can spring leaks and warp, preventing your car from starting — or more dangerous, keep it from stopping. Avoid overheating this component by not revving the engine while stepping on the brake.

5. Turbocharger/supercharger assemblies -- Turbochargers and superchargers help force air through the engine, allowing it to use more fuel, and increase power. Because these components operate at high rotational speeds, they are vulnerable to damage and susceptible to heat. Make sure you have the proper amount of oil in these components, as too much can be just as bad as not enough.

To find out about the next 5 of the most expensive car repairs, check back next month!

Wheel Alignment: Why is a Car Alignment so important?

Don’t ruin your summer road trip with a vehicle that does not have a proper wheel alignment. It will cause your tires to wear quicker than normal wear, creating a potential driving hazards, and other damage to your car. An improper car alignment causes…

  • Uneven tire wear and tear
  • Rough and slightly torn appearance.
  • Premature tire replacement.
  • Poor driving traction, which affects ability to stop under all circumstances
  • Poor handling.
To double-check your tires, a trained tire specialist will use ratings provided by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including the uniform tire quality grading (UTQG) system ratings. These ratings indicate the tread wear, traction and temperature capabilities. They will also be aware of a manufacturers’ information (such as tire type, width, aspect ratio, construction type, and rim diameter). These ratings are based on proper inflation and alignment. If your vehicle is consistently “out of alignment” with worn tires, a mechanic will find it impossible to determine how much heat your tire can take, how much load your vehicle can carry, and how quickly your vehicle can come to a stop. As a result, with an improper wheel alignment, a driver could be literally driving blind regarding what his or her car is can do.
Don’t delay in scheduling a car alignment as soon as possible if you are experiencing any of the conditions listed above. You will find that replacing four tires that wore prematurely is much more costly than having a proper wheel alignment performed in a timely manner.

Transmission Repair: Keep new car costs at bay with transmission service!

Buying a new car might sound great in theory but in these uncertain economic times, it might not be the right investment. Other options, such as a major transmission repair, may be a much better economic decision to keep new car costs at bay. Many consumers think that buying a new vehicle is the only solution when they experience serious engine trouble. In fact, a transmission repair will extend current vehicle life at a significantly lower cost than buying a new one, saving money in the long run.

If you are looking for transmission service Billings MT for any of transmission problems of you vehicle than find our Precision auto repair Billings MT shop. Meet us for engine repair Billings MT for safe driving.

Repairing or replacing your transmission can be one of the most expensive repairs you may have to make on your vehicle. Maintaining your transmission according to your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations, not only prolongs its life but it can prevent a costly repair or breakdown in the future.

To help maintain a safe and constant operating temperature, your vehicle uses transmission fluid to cool and lubricate the moving parts. The fluid reduces the amount of potentially damaging heat inside the transmission and helps increase the life of this important system. Because some of the ingredients in the transmission fluid break down over time due to this heat, many vehicle manufacturers recommend the fluid be replaced at specified maintenance intervals.

Your local auto mechanic should follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended service interval to perform a complete transmission fluid exchange for smooth and efficient operation. This transmission service should include:

  • Full removal of all old fluid
  • Install new quality grade transmission fluid
Before you consider a new vehicle purchase, talk with a professional automotive technician to see if a major transmission repair is the right choice for you.

For quality transmission repair, contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Price’s Precision today by calling (406) 248-2838, or go on-line to www.pricesprecisionauto.com for more information about our transmission service. • The dial is set on “cold,” but all you feel is hot air coming from the vents
  • Even though the A/C runs constantly, it never really feels cold
  • The A/C is “freezing” you out, operating colder than the dial setting indicates
  • You hear strange noises when the A/C is running
If you are experiencing any of the above problems, you will want to get that air conditioner service scheduled as soon as possible so that you can keep your cool.

A Diagnostic Air Conditioning Repair includes:

Car Tune Up: A Summer Road Trip means it’s Tune Up Time!

With summer road trips in full swing, make sure to schedule a tune up to make sure your car is ready to go when you are. Because of the advanced technology that is now in newer vehicles, it can sometimes be difficult to determine if your vehicle just needs a routine oil change, a coolant refill, or a complete car tune up. You certainly don’t want to be stranded on the side of the road instead of vacation bound!

If you are looking for quality tune up Billings MT than find our Precision auto repair Billings MT shop. Meet our engine service Billings MT mechanic to have safe driving.

A tune up may be necessary if you notice the following signs in your vehicle:

  • Problems starting
  • Decreased gas mileage
  • Loss of power
  • Rough idling, hesitation or stalling
  • “Check engine” light remains on
A routine car tune up is a sensible way to protect the long-term investment you’ve made in your vehicle. A trustworthy mechanic will be able to tell you what is needed when inquiring about a tune up.

Will my Car’s Performance improve with a Tune Up?

The power necessary to start your car starts with clean gas and air in the cylinders. This is where the combustion takes place which is initiated by the spark plugs. If any part of the combustion system, such as the fuel injectors, air filter, or fuel filter becomes clogged, or if the spark plugs become corroded, engine performance and gas mileage will decrease. Typically, a trained mechanic will check the air and oil filters when you take your vehicle in for a service. To keep your vehicle operating at maximum efficiency, it important that you follow the manufacturers' recommended replacement schedule for fuel filters, PCV valves, and spark plugs.

To sum it up simply; a car tune up along with regular maintenance will help maximize your vehicle’s reliability, engine performance, and gas mileage capabilities. You will be able to head out on that long-awaited for family vacation with confidence knowing your car will take you where you want to go.
Can’t trust your car? It’s time for a tune up. Contact the ASE Certified Technicians today by calling (406) 248-2838, or go on-line to www.pricesprecisionauto.com for more information. Auto Mechanic: Do you speak the same language as your mechanic?

When you’ve found a trustworthy auto mechanic, having your vehicle serviced can be a pleasant experience. However, making sure that you and your mechanic are “speaking the same language” in terms of labor, warranty, parts, and repairs can sometimes be a challenge. We’ve put together a few tips to help you communicate effectively with your auto mechanic. You’ll have fewer surprises with regard to cost, time, or vehicle operation, and your mechanic can better answer your questions about the type of work your vehicle requires.
If you are looking for quality brakes Billings MT than find our Precision car repair Billings MT shop. Meet our mechanic Billings MT to solve any of your car problems.
  • — This is an excellent starting point. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for things to be explained more simply or in layman’s terms. Your mechanic should also ask your questions to gain valuable diagnostic information and to understand exactly how you would like to proceed with any car repair.
  • Don’t be in a hurry

-- Take your time in talking with the auto mechanic and getting an exact diagnosis. A quick, on-the-spot diagnosis may be incorrect and waste valuable time.
  • Clear Instructions

-- Make sure that your mechanic knows you want to be called and apprised of the problem, course of action, and costs, before any actual work begins.
  • Understand Terms

-- Finally, make sure you have an understanding of the shop’s policies in terms of labor rates, guarantees, warranties, and acceptable methods of payment.
  • Be Available

-- Be sure to leave a contact number so you can be called you if there are any new discoveries or changes in repair plans.
REMEMBER: The more questions you ask before the actual work begins, the more you will understand, and the service to your vehicle will be much more satisfactory to you.

Car Alignment: 4 signs pointing to a needed Wheel Alignment!

Summer vacation planning is well on its way. It’s very disappointing to start out on that well-deserved vacation to find out your vehicle has an alignment issue. Improper wheel alignment can cause uneven or premature tire wear, interrupt your vacation plans, and even worse, jeopardize the safety of your passengers.
If you are looking for transmission repair Billings MT to solve transmission problems than find our Precision automotive service Billings MT shop. Find wheel alignment Billings MT with us to have safe driving.

What is the purpose of wheel alignment? Simply stated, a proper car alignment will maximize the life of your tires and make sure your vehicle drives straight and true, enhancing the safety of your vehicle. A correct wheel alignment consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are perpendicular to the road and parallel to each other.

What are the 4 Signs to watch for?

  • Steering corrections needed while driving on a straight level road
  • Off center spokes of the steering wheel while driving straight
  • Uneven and rapid tire wear
  • Pulling or drifting away from a straight line when you release the steering wheel

Try this visual test to check your car’s alignment. Take a coin and insert it in the tread at the inside, center, and outside of each tire and you will notice if…

  • Consistently over-inflated - tread is deeper on the edges than in the center.
  • Consistently under-inflated - tread is deeper in the center than the edges.
  • If the tread is deeper on one of the car than the other, schedule a wheel alignment inspection.
  • “Saw-tooth” wear pattern (tread is smooth in one direction, but jagged in the other). Again, have your car alignment checked as soon as possible as this condition will result in a premature tire replacement.
A four-wheel alignment is the best type. It allows the technician to identify any rear tracking problems and compensate for them with adjustments to the front. After the wheel alignment is completed, test-drive the car on a straight, level road. Make sure it goes straight and that the steering wheel is in the proper position with the spokes level. If you notice a problem, don’t hesitate to take your car back so the tire technician can fine-tune the alignment settings.

Radiator Service Check List Equals Quality Radiator Repair!

Before the hot summer months are finally here, it’s a good time to consider a radiator service. If your vehicle seems to be overheating and you’re headed for an auto service center for a radiator repair, make note of the following things to inform your auto mechanic. This will save you time and money by being aware of these symptoms:
If you are looking for radiator service Billings MT than Find our Precision auto repair Billings MT shop.Find transmission repair Billings MT with us to solve transmission problems.
Before starting your vehicle:
  • Check to determine “when” the engine overheating actually occurs, especially if there is no leak and level of fluid is correct. This will help your mechanic rule-out some issues and determine the possible cause of overheating.
  • Check the coolant/antifreeze level. Be sure to remove the radiator cap (when the engine is cold) and look inside. If the fluid is at the proper level, you should be able to physically see it. If you have to add more than a pint or if you see any obvious loss on the ground or in the engine compartment, you will want to schedule a radiator service to have the cooling system pressure tested for a leak.
When the engine is idling or at low speeds:
  • Check to see if the cooling fan for the radiator is working properly. Most cars have a motor fan which is responsible for engine cooling.
  • Check to see if your car has an air conditioner condenser fan. The air conditioning compressor will require the cooling fan to operate at idle as long as the compressor is on.
While the engine is operating at driving speed:
  • Check to see if there is enough coolant/anti-freeze circulating. Airflow and coolant circulation are crucial at 55 MPH. The water pump should be pumping a large amount of coolant/antifreeze throughout the cooling system.
  • Check for a restriction in the system like a kinked radiator hose, or a stuck thermostat if overheating is occurring at normal driving speeds.
If you have checked all of the above suggestions, take your notes with your car to your local auto center for a radiator service so you are ready for those hot days of summer.

Engine Rebuild: 3 engine components that could cause an Engine Repair!

Now that the long winter is behind us and spring has arrived, it’s time to give your vehicle some serious attention as part of your vacation planning. Focusing on the engine, the heart of your car, is the most vital part in taking you on that dream vacation. Its basic purpose is to convert air and fuel into rotary motion to turn the wheels of the car. If the air and fuel is blocked and can’t be converted into motion, an engine repair will likely become necessary. It’s wise to have your vehicle inspected and maintained by a trained auto mechanic on a regular basis to prevent an engine rebuild.
If you are looking for engine repair Billings MT services than meet our auto repairs Billings MT mechanic at Precision Automotive. Also find transmission repair Billings MT to save your vehicle from transmission problems.

An engine rebuild can be the result of the 3 engine components that typically fail:

  • Pistons: Most motors have 4, 6, or 8 pistons, which move vertically in the cylinders. The pistons have rings which serve to keep the oil separate from fuel and air and keep it from entering the combustion chamber.
What needs repair? As the rings wear out, fuel and air enters the oil and dilutes it, reducing its ability to lubricate your engine, causing premature wear. Grayish/white smoke coming from your car’s tailpipe indicates worn out rings which have allowed oil from the crankcase to enter the combustion chamber, and then burning.
  • Valve train: The valve train consists of valves, rocker arms, pushrods, lifters, and camshaft. Its only job is to let air and fuel in and out of the engine at the proper time. The timing is controlled by the camshaft, which is synchronized to the crankshaft by a chain or belt.
What needs repair? If your car smokes grayish/white smoke only when you start it up, it may have leaking valve seals. When the seals wear out or crack, oil can seep into the combustion chamber and collect there until you start your car again.
  • Crankshaft: The crankshaft is connected to the pistons by a connecting rod. As a piston moves vertically in the cylinder, it rotates the crankshaft and converts the straight line motion into rotary motion. The crankshaft rides on bearings, which support the crankshaft and rods, which connects the pistons to the crankshaft.
What needs repair? These bearings eventually wear down causing a loud knocking noise. This problem usually leads to a costly engine repair, which may mean removing the crankshaft and either machining the surface where the bearings ride, or replacing the entire crankshaft.

Tire rotation and tire balance – 2 basic necessities for quality tire performance!

Tires are expensive–there’s no way around it. If at all possible, you will want to purchase the best ones you can afford because your family depends on them when driving conditions are at their worst. Like any other component on your vehicle, they can be made to last longer with proper maintenance. Tire rotation and tire balance are two important services in keeping your car safe for your family.

If you are looking for tire rotation Billings MT balancing services than meet our mechanic Billings MT at Precision Automotive. Also find wheel alignment Billings MT to have safe driving.

Your auto technician will usually recommend a rotation about every 7,000 miles, or about at every other oil change. This can vary based on vehicle weight, driving conditions and the quality of the tire.

Ideally, try to take your vehicle to where you purchased your tires for a tire rotation and tire balance. The specialist there should also check and adjust the air pressure as necessary based on the manufacturer’s specifications, as well as check for any damage or uneven wear.

Don’t ignore the necessity of a tire inspection at the recommended intervals. You could be driving on improperly inflated tires, leading to uneven wear and possibly tire failure. Uneven wear can also be a sign of an improper wheel alignment. If the cause of the problem is discovered early, the cost of the repair will be minimized.

Tires, like comfortable shoes, must be properly fitted and maintained if we plan on having an enjoyable and comfortable journey. This is especially is true when it comes to proper tire rotation and tire balance. Failing to maintain them is not only the same as throwing money away, but compromising the safety of your passengers as well.

Want to Rumble? Upgrading the Performance of your Exhaust System!

If you’re interested in making an impression with your muffler, or beefing up the performance of your vehicle, then upgrading your exhaust system is one of the easiest ways to accomplish that.

If you are looking for muffler Billings MT or inspection of exhaust system Billings MT than your search can be over now with our Precision automotive repair Billings MT shop.

The exhaust system is one of the key systems in relation to the overall performance of a vehicle. Composed of tubing intended to expel exhaust gases away from the controlled combustion taking place inside your engine, this system facilitates the removal of waste gases to streamline horsepower, gas mileage and the overall efficiency of your car or truck. The manufacturer’s original mufflers and exhaust system components are intentionally manufactured to limit this process. Their primary intent is to stifle the noise created by your engine, which then of course, also reduces its efficiency. This explains why after-market mufflers and performance exhaust systems have been produced to be purchased and installed onto vehicles for those who “want a little more!”

There are several after-market manufacturers that produce similar products, yet, at the same time, they each have some unique features that distinguish one from the other. Depending on your needs and personal taste, these differences will definitely be important to you. Performance exhaust systems feature vehicle-enhancing components. These components provide an immediate boost to performance while also delivering the “rumble” that is virtually non-existent in stock parts.

Before you make a decision to upgrade your muffler and exhaust system, ask your auto service professional about what upgrades are available for your vehicle and to explain the differences and advantages of each.

Oil changes: Why should I know about the 3 types of oil?

To keep the moving parts of your engine lubricated, oil changes are very important. To prevent excessive engine wear and tear, auto mechanics will recommend an oil change on a regular basis. This is vital to keep your vehicle functioning efficiently.
If you are looking for quality oil change Billings MT than your search can be over now with our Precision auto repair services Billings MT shop. Also find transmission service Billings MT to solve transmission problems.

Here are some basic facts about oil changes:

Grades: Each type of oil is graded by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The higher the grade number–up to 70–the higher the viscosity (or thickness). These numbers are often referred to as weight. Some common weights include 5W-30, 10W-20 and 10W-30.
Viscosity: This is an important factor in determining which type of oil is right for your car. Too thin, and it won’t lubricate the engine parts well enough when it heats up. Most vehicles can use “multi-viscosity,” which has passed the SAE specifications--thinner at lower temperatures and thicker at higher temperatures. When choosing the proper type for your next oil change, you will want to consider the climate in which you drive your vehicle.

What kind is the best to use?

There are three main kinds–-conventional, synthetic and synthetic blend.

  • Conventional is organic and limited in its capabilities, and is highly reactive to temperatures.
  • Synthetic gives you better engine performance, as it is more slippery than conventional and has fewer imperfections in its chemical buildup. Synthetic can cost up to three times as much as conventional; but you don’t have to have an oil change quite as often.
  • Synthetic blend is a combination of conventional and synthetic. This type is usually less expensive, and it provides some of the performance enhancement you get from a synthetic.
If you’re in doubt, it is best to follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations, When it’s time for your next oil change, consult your local auto mechanic for the final say--they’ll know what’s right for your vehicle.

Car Maintenance: 4 Tools to Have on Hand!

For the ambitious and cost-conscious vehicle owner, you could save yourself some money by taking care of basic vehicle maintenance in your driveway. But it helps to have the right tools on hand and just a little bit of know-how,.

If you are looking for car battery replacement Billings MT than your search can be over now with our Precision auto repair Billings MT shop. Find vehicle maintenance Billings MT to have safe driving.

Here are four Do-It-Yourself tools for the casual home mechanic:

Shop Towels-You should always keep a roll of shop towels handy at home, and make sure you’ve got a few in your glove box, too. Shop towels are useful for all sorts of tasks, but especially when it’s time to check your car’s oil. When you initially pull the dipstick out, it’ll be coated with oil, so you’ll need to wipe it off before reinserting it for accurate measurement.

A Funnel-When it’s time to add a bit of oil, an all-purpose funnel comes in handy. You really want to avoid dumping flammable liquid all over your hot engine if you can help it. A funnel also comes in handy if, your car overheats and you need to add water or coolant. Again, checking and adding fluids will save you expensive vehicle maintenance costs in the future.

A Tire Pressure Gauge-Flat tires are safety hazards of course, so checking them regularly is important. Radial tires especially, need to be checked with a tire pressure gauge. If you want to avoid expensive car maintenance and premature tire purchases, take the time and effort to regularly check the pressure in your vehicle’s tires.

Pair of Jack Stands-If you start hearing the mournful groan of dying brake pads, for example, quality jack stands will come in handy for doing minor brake repair or other simple vehicle maintenance jobs. Jack stands are also useful if you plan on changing your own oil. For safety, use a pair of jack stands, one for each side of your vehicle.

Taking care of minor vehicle maintenance jobs can save you a considerable amount of money in the long run. It also can give you a positive sense of accomplishment as you personally take care of your automobile. You will find repeated use for these do-it-yourself tools as you continue to service your car.

Do you need professional advice on vehicle maintenance? Car Service: Is a Car Repair needed for a car that won’t start?

Before you call a tow truck to take you to the nearest auto shop for an inconvenient car repair, a little bit of effort on your part can save your auto mechanic a lot of time trying to guess what happened and why. You might actually avoid a costly car service if you can find the problem yourself.

If you are looking for complete car repair Billings MT than your search can be over now with our Precision auto repairs Billings MT shop. Find brake service Billings MT to have safe driving.

If your car won’t start, here are some simple things to check:

  • Headlights? If they are on and are bright, then the battery is working efficiently. Most likely there is a problem with the starter, or something is hampering the course of the electricity from the battery to the starter. The starter takes electricity from the battery and turns the engine over to start the piston explosion process. In this case, a car repair will be necessary to take care of a faulty starter.
  • Fuel Gauge? If the motor turns over but won’t start, first make sure you haven’t run out of gas before assuming the worst!
  • Compression? Does the engine sound like it is turning over fully, or does it sound too fast or too slow? A broken timing belt or chain will cause the engine to turn over very easily and fast because the compression process is not taking place. You will definitely need to schedule a car repair if this is the case.
  • Tires? Are the front tires up against the curb? Sometimes it is hard to turn the key if the tires are in a bind on a curb, or if the car has rolled back a bit after placed in PARK. In this case, turn the steering wheel hard to the right, or try to physically move or rock the car forward to release the key.

At this point you have ruled out the battery, belts, lack of fuel, and position of the tires. If your car still won’t start, it’s time to call that tow truck for an inevitable car repair. When you call for help, be specific about the nature of the "no start" problem you've experienced. Saving your mechanic time should save you dollars on a car repair.
