Auto Center Offers Safety Tips for Child Pedestrians.

Now that school is just around the corner, there will be lots of children out and about on the streets and sidewalks. An auto center wants to remind drivers that it's a good idea to brush up on safe driving tips to help prevent auto-pedestrian accidents. All drivers need to recognize the special safety needs of pedestrians, especially children, the elderly, disabled and intoxicated. These are the most frequent victims in auto- pedestrian collisions. Visit your auto shop and make sure your vehicle is safe by braking quickly, and that all lights and blinkers are working properly.

A review of the following safety tips is offered by an auto center:

  • Generally, pedestrians have the right-of-way at all intersections; however, regardless of the rules of the road or right-of-way, you as a driver are obligated to exercise great care and extreme caution to avoid striking pedestrians.
  • Drivers should not block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn. Do not stop with a portion of your vehicle over the crosswalk. Blocking the crosswalk forces pedestrians to go around your vehicle and may put them in harm's way.
  • In a school zone when a warning flasher or flashers are blinking, you must stop to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a marked crosswalk or at an intersection with no marked crosswalk.
  • Always stop when directed to do so by a school patrol sign, school patrol officer or designated crossing guard.
  • Children are the least predictable pedestrians and the most difficult to see. Take extra precautions to look out for children in school zones, residential areas, playgrounds and parks, where children may be playing.
  • Don't honk your horn, rev your engine or do anything to rush or scare a pedestrian in front of your car, even if you have the legal right-of-way.
The safety tips provided by this auto center can save lives and prevent auto accidents and accident related injuries. They can also keep your vehicle out of the auto shop for unexpected repairs caused in an accident.

Transmission Repair 101

The average driver knows little about the transmission in their car, let alone the basics of transmission repair or transmission service. In-Car Repairs -- There are several problems that can be resolved with an adjustment in which the unit remains in the vehicle. These types of problems can be corrected at much less cost than a complete overhaul or replacement.
  • Improper shifting: If a computer-controlled transmission is not shifting properly, it is often the result of the car's computer sending incorrect signals, or it is not reacting to the computer command. If a non computer-controlled transmission is not shifting properly, the throttle cable can be adjusted. If the vehicle has a vacuum modulator, it also can be adjusted, making sure that there are no vacuum leaks and that the engine is running at peak efficiency. In some older models, bands can be adjusted to resolve "slipping" conditions. Slipping is when an engine races briefly when shifting from one gear to the next.
  • Resealing: Resealing is done in order to repair external fluid leaks. If a leak is spotted at any of the external seals or gaskets and the transmission otherwise performs well, the technician will most likely recommend that it be resealed. Most of the external seals can be replaced while the unit is still in the car. But if the front seal must be replaced, the unit must first be removed from the vehicle in order to gain access to it, making it a much costlier job.
Complete Overhaul – There are other problems that can only be resolved by removing the transmission from the vehicle. These types of problems are more costly, requiring more hours of labor and various components that need to be replaced.
  • Rebuilding: The transmission is removed from the vehicle and completely disassembled. Each part is inspected for wear and damage and then either cleaned in a special cleaning solution, or replaced with another part depending on its condition. Parts that have friction surfaces, such as bands and clutches are replaced, as are all seals and gaskets. The torque converter is also replaced.
  • Replacement Unit vs. Overhaul Existing Unit: When an overhaul is required, there are generally two options: first, remove the unit and overhaul it or second, replace the unit with another rebuilt or remanufactured unit. The second option will get you out of the shop and on your way much faster than the first.
