This time of year, many people are cleaning garages, beautifying their yards, and re-painting their house to protect the
investment they have made in their home. Don't forget about your automobile! Before heading out on a summer road trip, a wise driver will get their car
ready for summer's hot temperatures by treating it to a tune up.
A car tune up consists of an inspection of the engine, an analysis of a vehicle's overall performance, and needed
adjustments made to the operating systems. A tune up is both preventative and restorative maintenance. The age, mileage, and manufacturer's recommendations
will determine the extent of the tune up (or maintenance service) for your specific vehicle.

What is inspected and serviced during a basic car tune up?
- Spark plugs — the insulator firing noses should be light tan or gray. Any other color could be the sign of an engine problem. What color is the spark and is it properly igniting the fuel? Make sure the wires are not hard or cracked.
- Fuel pump and filter – the filter should be clean and the pump should be functioning properly.
- Fuel injectors -- dirt or other deposits can restrict the amount of fuel delivered to the engine so make sure there is no buildup of corrosion.
- Timing -- the timing and idle can be adjusted as necessary.
- PCV valve — it should not be clogged or leaking.
- Points and condenser — they should be clean and operating properly.
A car tune up is not a one-size fits all service, but is based on the age of the vehicle, the number of miles driven, and
the vehicle's maintenance history. If your vehicle still seems to have performance problems after a tune up, your auto technician can run an analysis of
other engine components in addition to those listed above to pinpoint the problems.
