Many people have gone on their last road trip for summer and are starting a busy schedule of work, school, sports, and the
list goes on. Because hot weather makes existing problems worse, prevent a major engine repair down the road! To start off the fall season right,
check your vehicle maintenance schedule, including an engine service, and make sure you are on track.

Even though summer is past and cooler weather is on the way, don't neglect your vehicle's cooling system. Cooling system
failure is a leading cause of vehicle breakdowns. You can possibly avoid an unnecessary and expensive engine repair, not to mention the frustration of an
interrupted schedule.
If the cooling system hasn't received regular maintenance, it's not a question of whether it will fail, but when it will
fail.
Tips for maintaining your vehicle's cooling system:
- Coolant – If coolant is not changed regularly, it will lose its effectiveness in preventing corrosion and its freeze- protection abilities. Check your owner's manual for the recommended replacement interval. Check the level of coolant periodically to prevent overheating of your engine.
- Radiator – Make sure the radiator cap is screwed on tightly and does not leak. Have it pressure tested to ensure it is functioning properly at the same time a pressure test is performed on the entire cooling system. Again, change the coolant (with its corrosion inhibitors) on a regular basis to prevent internal corrosion in the radiator. Flush the coolant periodically to remove any debris. Look for any external obstructions on the radiator, such as paper, leaves, bugs or other debris that may have stuck to it and is blocking air flow.
- Belts and Hoses – Because belts and hoses are made of rubber, they will wear and degrade over time with normal use. Inspect them for cracks or soft or bulging spots. If they fail, your cooling system stops working. Replace belts and hoses approximately every four years or when your mechanic recommends.
- Water pump – On many vehicles, the water pump is driven by the timing belt. Replace the water pump at the same interval as the timing belt. A failing water pump means an overheating engine.
Watch for signs of problems, such as the temperature gauge rising near the danger zone, coolant leaks, steam or hissing
sounds under the hood, or the distinct smell of coolant or an engine that's running hot. Prevent overheating or other car problems by having the proper
engine service and maintenance performed on schedule!
