A Gift for your Car: A Timely Tune-up!

Tune Up Billings MT

This is the season for gift giving.  Don’t forget your vehicle, whether it’s old or new.  If it’s been squealing, sluggish, vibrating, and generally unreliable, it’s time to give it a tune-up.  Today’s vehicles differ significantly from older models that required a car tune up every 10,000 or 20,000 miles.  It’s now more common for manufacturer- recommended service intervals to stretch to 100,000 miles before certain maintenance items, such as replacing the spark plugs, need to be taken care of.

If you are looking for quality Tune Up Billings MT than find our dedicated Automotive Service Billings MT shop. Also find Muffler Billings MT replacement to have safe driving.

That doesn’t mean that routine maintenance or potential warning signs should be ignored.  Replacing a vehicle is expensive. A more economical alternative is to take care of the one you have. Start by paying attention to what your vehicle might be trying to tell you and by recognizing the signs that it’s tune-up time.

 1. Dashboard Warning lights.  These lights signal that a problem needs some attention.  Diagnosing and fixing a minor problem can help you avoid a much bigger and costlier problem down the road.
2. Stalling.  Could be caused by fouled spark plugs or a clogged fuel filter.
3. Hard starts.  Possibly due to a weak battery or a defective starter.
4. Poor fuel mileage.  A sudden decrease in fuel mileage could be due to improper tire pressure, or it’s simply time for a tune-up.
5. Soft or noisy brakes. Brake pads, rotors and brake fluid will wear out over time and need to be maintained and replaced periodically.
6. Other strange noises.  Common noises include squealing when turning the steering wheel at low speeds (could be low power steering fluid level), squealing from under the hood when starting (possibly a loose or worn belt), noise from a wheel (maybe an unbalanced tire or a failing CV joint). Listen to your vehicle and get that noise checked out!
7. Rough shifting.  Transmission fluid, filters and screens, all require periodic maintenance for protection and a long life.
8. Loss of power.  Regular maintenance, or a car tune up, can help prevent loss of power, especially needed when merging onto a highway, overtaking a vehicle on a two-lane road, or towing a trailer uphill.
9. Vibration.  The sudden appearance of a vibration in the steering wheel or throughout the whole car could indicate worn or unbalanced tires, a tire going flat, or a failing universal joint.

Tip to Remember:  Read your owner’s manual.  In addition to advice from your auto repair technician, refer to your owner’s manual and follow its recommendations for maintenance service intervals, listen to what your vehicle is trying to tell you, and act on those warning signs.

To learn more about the tune-up procedure that’s right for your vehicle, contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Precision Auto for more information about a car tune up and to schedule an appointment. Our Tech-Net professional auto repair shop in Billings, MT, also serves vehicle owners in the areas of Shepherd and Laurel, MT.

Routine Vehicle Maintenance: A Wise Investment!

Car Maintenance Billings MT

With the holiday season and budgets stretched tight, many vehicle owners put routine car maintenance on the back burner, so to speak.  They believe they are saving money.  In actuality, they will probably end up spending more than ever with unexpected repairs as they start experiencing problems, such as with brakes or steering.  Consider routine vehicle maintenance as an investment that can offer you a big return with a reliable vehicle and less dollars spent on major auto repairs.

If you are looking for Brake Service Billings MT than find our dedicated Car Maintenance Billings MT Services shop. Also find Radiator Service Billings MT to have safe driving.

Why spend money on vehicle maintenance?  It will. . .
  • enhance the safety of you and your passengers, and other motorists
  • increase gas mileage
  • ensure a smoother running vehicle
  • ensures your vehicle will come to a stop quickly.
Pay attention to the four important vehicle maintenance items listed below:
  1. Tires – Good tires are crucial to a vehicle’s ability to stop and turn effectively.  Invest in a tire pressure gauge and check the pressure about every 1,000 miles. The proper inflation pressure will give you better mileage!  For uniform tread-wear, rotate the tires on a regular basis.  If you see the wear bars, it’s time for a new set of tires.  You may want to consider purchasing all- weather or snow tires for winter driving.
  2. Oil and Filter – Don’t neglect regular oil changes and a quality filter.  Read your owner’s manual or follow your mechanic’s advice for the correct interval for your vehicle.  Cold weather makes dirty oil more sluggish.
  3. Brakes -- Have the brakes inspected at each visit to your auto repair shop.  Watch for signs of brake failure, such as squealing noises, pedal softness, or vibration.  A fully operational braking system is critical in snowy and icy conditions.
  4. Transmission – Typically, most mechanics do not road-test vehicles for transmission problems.  It’s up to you to report any signs of problems.  Don’t wait until you have a major breakdown!
Remember:  Even though scheduled car maintenance can sometimes cost more than is comfortable for your budget, it will save you money in the long run by prolonging the life of all the systems and parts that make your car function safely.

Invest in regular car maintenance!  Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at http://www.precisionautomt.com for more information about basic vehicle maintenance and to schedule an appointment .  Our Tech-Net professional auto repair shop in Billings, MT, also serves vehicle owners in the areas of Shepherd and Laurel,MT.

  2. Strange Sounds in the Engine – Strange sounds coming from the engine is an indication that there is some grinding or friction going on with the belts under the hood.
  3. Burning Smell – A burning smell could be caused by over-heating electric connections, indicating a circuit or fuse malfunction.
  4. Dimming Lights – This is usually an indication of failing alternators--the car battery can’t keep a charge to run the lighting system.
  5. Dead Battery – If a jump-start gets you going, don’t forget to have your battery checked.  Weak batteries can cause further damage to starters and alternators.

Regular Transmission Service For Smooth Shifting!

Transmission Repair Billings MT

Are you experiencing jerky shifting? Maybe your car’s gears are slipping. More than likely you are headed for a costly transmission repair. One way to prevent shifting problems in the first place is to be sure to keep up with transmission service on a regular basis. Even though your budget may be tight, keeping up with routine transmission service can prolong, if not put off all together, a serious and costly transmission repair.

If you are looking for quality Transmission Repair Billings MT than find our dedicated Auto Center Billings MT shop. Also meet our Air Conditioner Repair Billings MT mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

Consider the differences between a relatively easy and inexpensive transmission service versus a more lengthy and costly transmission repair:

Transmission Service:

  • Draining the transmission fluid – Keep the fluid clean by draining out the old and refilling with new. Your transmission service technician may recommend a “flush” to remove all contaminants.
  • Change the transmission filter – Replace the dirty filter with a fresh one. If the transmission pan is removed in order to change the filter, the seals are typically replaced as well.
  • Codes and electronics check – Your vehicle’s computer may need out-of-date codes deleted and updated with new codes.

Transmission Repair . . .

  • Replacing faulty sensors – If the sensors are faulty, inaccurate information is sent to the transmission, resulting in irregular shifting performance.
  • Unit rebuilt – Each component is inspected, cleaned and replaced as necessary. This is labor intensive and your vehicle will not be available for your use for an extended period of time.
  • Electrical system checked - All electrical components are checked, required repairs made and faulty parts replaced.
  • Rebuilt or remanufactured unit – If more serious repairs are needed, the next level of repair is a transmission rebuild or a remanufactured unit installed.
A word to the wise: Maintaining your vehicle’s transmission can be as worry-free as having quality transmission service performed on a regular basis.

Looking for professional transmission repair? Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Precision Auto by calling (406) 248- 2838, or go on-line to www.pricesprecisionauto.com for more information about transmission service. Engine Repair: Replace or Rebuild?

Engine Repair Billings MT

Have you neglected routine engine service because of a tight budget or time constraints? Unfortunately, you may now be looking at a major engine repair, such as either rebuilding your engine, or replacing it altogether. This may be causing you even more anxiety than before!

If you are looking for Engine Repair Billings MT than find our dedicated Car Maintenance Billings MT Services shop. Also find Starters Billings MT to have safe driving.

When your vehicle develops a serious problem, such as a loud knocking sound, the first step is to diagnose the problem. The options for engine repair depend on the diagnosis.

It is generally worthwhile to rebuild an engine if it is just burning an excessive amount of oil, or if there is low compression issues caused by worn piston rings. When your car starts making strange knocking sounds, you may be wondering how serious the problem could be. It could be one of many things, such as worn-out bearings between one (or more) connecting rods and the crankshaft. There are various options to pursue. Compare the value of your vehicle with the cost of the engine repair. Knowing the vehicle's value can guide your repair choices. If the cost of replacing or rebuilding an engine is more than half the value of the car, that does not make sense.
  • First, buying a used engine is a reasonable approach, if you know its history. Don’t pay too much for a used engine that might be a few thousand miles from developing its own rod knock, or some other problem.
  • Secondly, engines often have their weak areas. If you looked at a thousand vehicles of the same make, model, and year, you might see a pattern of failures. Certain parts or systems are prone to breakage or early wear. .
Tip to Remember: Regular engine service prevents major engine repair. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!”

  2. Rebuild Your Engine.  If you are facing serious engine trouble and are thinking of purchasing a newer vehicle, first consider a remanufactured or rebuilt engine.  For about the cost of an average down payment on a new car, your vehicle will gain new life with greater fuel efficiency.
  3. Recycle Properly.  Recycling and properly disposing of motor oil, tires, batteries, and other used parts and fluids during an automotive service or automotive repair in a conscientious manner will help protect our earth.
  4. Extend Vehicle Life.  Extending the lifespan of your vehicle is as simple as having quality automotive service performed at the appropriate intervals, and by not neglecting any necessary automotive repair issues.  Your vehicle will thank you by giving you years of reliable service without monthly car payments and higher insurance rates.

Quality Oil Changes: Key to Increased Performance!

 Oil Changes Billings MT

With the price of vehicles rising each year, you want to take care of your current vehicle, which includes quality oil changes.  Skimping on oil changes might find you spending more time and money in an auto repair shop.  Regular oil change intervals, plus the use of high-quality oil, are major factors in how your vehicle performs, possibly increasing its lifespan to 200,000 miles or more!

If you are looking for quality Oil Changes Billings MT than find our dedicated Exhaust Systems Billings MT shop. Also meet our Tune Up Billings MT mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

An engine has two big enemies—heat and friction! Regular oil changes guard against the damage that heat and friction causes, lubricating moving parts and increasing engine.

To help preserve your vehicle’s engine for increased performance and longevity, here are some basic facts to know about oil changes:

  1. The right weight – Typically, a 5W-30 performs better in colder climates, 10W-40 for warmer climates. Knowing the difference can help the overall performance of your engine.
  2. Manufacturer's Recommendations – Be sure to use the oil recommended by your vehicle's manufacturer.  Using the wrong type could void the manufacturer’s warranty.
  3. Consider Synthetic Oil - It will cost a little more at each oil change, but will eventually pay off with increased savings.  Synthetic provides better protection, increased oil change intervals, greater resistance to breakdowns, improved cold weather starts, and increased fuel mileage.  Some vehicles can go as much as 10,000 to 15,000 miles between oil changes while using synthetic oil.  In contrast, petroleum motor oils provide adequate protection, but are prone to breakdown, sludge, and a required oil change every 3,000 miles.
  4. Clean oil - Follow the oil change recommendations for your vehicle, and keep a record of it. During normal operation, engines produce metal fragments harmful to the engine. Routine oil changes help to "flush" out any fragments and keep the oil clean.
  5. Quality filter – Don’t skimp on the filer.  A quality filter is worth the extra cost for the added protection.
Looking for quality oil changes at affordable prices?  Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Precision Auto by calling (406) 248-2838, or go on-line to www.pricesprecisionauto.com for more information and to find our oil change coupons.  Our Tech-Net professional auto repair shop in Billings, MT, also serves vehicle owners in the areas of Shepherd and LaurelMT.

Car Repair Warranties: What are you paying for?

Have you had a car service performed lately? Were you offered a warranty on the parts or labor? Because there are so many different types of car repair warranties out there, it can get confusing as to whether or not the warranty offered is a good one or not so good.  Before making a decision, be sure to ask some questions and find out exactly what kind of warranty is being offered on the car repair or car service. You want to know what you are paying for!

If you are looking for quality Tire Balance Billings MT than find our dedicated Car Repair Billings MT shop. Also meet our Oil Changes Billings MT mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

Questions to ask about warranties offered on car repair:

1. What is covered?

Be sure you understand what all the warranty covers, or what it does not cover, as not all warranties cover the same things.  For example, does it cover just the drive train or is it bumper-to-bumper? How many miles or months does it last before it expires?

 2. What is the cost?

Will the warranty be cost-effective for the long term, or is it based on more short-term issues? Is there a deductible?   If so, how often does it have to be met?  Compare, on average, how much you spend in car repair every year versus how much you will end up paying each year for a warranty.

3. Are there any stipulations?

Read the fine print before purchasing the warranty. Every extended warranty normally comes with a set of stipulations. How stringent are those rules and does it apply only to that particular dealer or auto repair shop?

To simply sum it up--there are three main issues to understand when making a decision about car repair warranties:
  • Coverage
  • Cost
  • Stipulations
Before committing to an extended warranty on your next car repair, ask for advice from our car service professionals.  Contact the ASE Certified Technicians at Precision Auto by calling (406) 248-2838, or go on-line to www.precisionautomt.com for more information.  Our Tech-Net professional auto shop in Billings, MT, also services vehicle owners in the areas of Shepherd and LaurelMT.

Quality Brake Service for Healthy Brakes!

Regular brake service should not be treated lightly. In an emergency, stopping quickly is important for the safety of you and your passengers. Regular brake service will ensure that your vehicle is operating as safe as possible with fully functioning brakes. You need to be confident that your vehicle will come to a complete and precise stop.

If you are looking for expert Brake Service Billings MT your search can be over now with our Precision Auto Tire Rotation Billings MT Shop. Also find Engine Service Billings MT to keep your car up to date.

If you are experiencing any of the problems described below, it is a good indication that you may need some form of brake replacement:

  • The brake pedal seems to be spongy or presses farther to the floor than usual.
  • Your vehicle pulls to the right or left when you brake.
  • Unusual noises (squealing) or vibrations occur during braking.
Brake pad replacement is the most common repair job for braking systems. The reason is simple: brakes are designed to wear out. The pads rub on the brake disk to stop your car, so worn pads are the first thing to check if you are experiencing any braking problems. If the pads are worn thin or are cracked from heat, a full inspection may be necessary.  Since brake pads are only one possible problem, there are other components that should be inspected during a brake service.

Be careful when looking for brake service specials. The cheapest price is not always the best price for a service or brake replacement in the long run.  The least expensive options don’t always provide the most complete analysis of the problem.

A word to the wise: Ask the experts to install a brake replacement component for you.  Don’t do it yourself!  Drive safe with peace of mind that you are protecting yourself, your passengers, and other motorists as much as possible.

For quality brake service at a fair price, contact the ASE Certified Technicians at Precision Auto by calling  (406) 248-2838, or go on-line to www.precisionautomt.com for more information about brake replacement.  Our Tech-Net professional auto shop in Billings, MT, also services vehicle owners in the areas of Shepherd and LaurelMT.

Auto Electrical Repair: Beware of a Failing Alternator.

Many vehicle owners have learned from experience that ignoring problems associated with alternators and starters won’t fix them, they only get worse! You may end up with problems ranging from “slow” starts to a vehicle that refuses to start at all. Look for the help of professionals for the right auto electrical repair.

If you are looking for Auto Electrical Repair Billings MT than find our dedicated Auto Repair Shop Billings MT Services shop. Also find Wheel Alignment Billings MT to have safe driving.

The Electrical System –

The electrical system consists of the battery, starter and alternator. When you turn the key in the starter, the electrical system goes into action. The battery provides juice to the starter, the starter turns and the alternator gives the battery the energy it needs to power your lights, defroster, wipers, and accessories. If one of these three components is not working properly, your car won’t start or run correctly.
  • Battery – The battery provides the car’s entire electrical current until the key is turned in the starter.
  • Starter -- The battery supplies the power to the starter motor to start your vehicle, but it is the starter that gets the engine going. The starter rotates the flywheel, which turns the crankshaft and begins the movement of the engine’s pistons. An excessive current draw will indicate a worn starter, while a low current draw points to corroded cables or connections.
  • Alternator -- When your engine is running, the alternator keeps the battery charged and the electrical system going. Your car can start with a faulty alternator, but it won’t be able to run for an extended period of time. The electrical system will perform erratically, the battery will discharge, and eventually the engine will lose power. An auto electrical repair can tell you whether or not the alternator is generating the proper amount of current and voltage.

Auto Electrical Repair Ensures a Reliable Ride!

Your car’s electrical system is important. Left unchecked, a weak or dead battery can wreak havoc on other components, like alternators and starters. If your alternator or starter is showing signs of failing, take your car to your preferred auto repair technician so they can assess the situation and perform the appropriate auto electrical repair..

Concerned about a possible failing alternator?  Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Price’s Precision auto repair shop today by calling (406) 248-2838, or go on-line to www.precisionautomt.com for more information about auto electrical repair.  Our Tech-Net professional auto repair shop in Billings, MT, also serves vehicle owners in the areas of Shepherd and LaurelMT.

Noisy Muffler? Your Exhaust System may have a leak!

Until the muffler starts to make a lot of noise and a problem develops, not many drivers give much thought about their vehicle's exhaust system. Some drivers don't understand the job of the exhaust system. It does more than keep your car quiet--it routes toxic fumes away from the passenger cabin, helps your engine run properly, maintains optimum fuel efficiency, and reduces polluting emissions.

If you are looking for dedicated Muffler Billings MT your search can be over now with our Price Precision Car Service Billings MT Shop. Also find our quality Car Battery Billings MT for your car safety.

The most common problem that develops in the exhaust system is a leak of the toxic fumes and gases. Depending on your vehicle, the cost to repair an exhaust leak and other muffler repairs can range widely. Delaying a needed repair can make it cost more because continuing to drive with an exhaust leak or bad catalytic converter can damage other things in your vehicle's operating system.

An obvious sign of problems is a deep or loud rumbling sound coming from your car. Don't just turn up the radio to drown out a loud muffler. Here are a few other issues to watch for:

  • Catalytic converter -- The catalytic converter is one of the highest priced exhaust system parts and in some vehicles, such as SUVs and trucks, it may be prone to theft by scrap metal thieves. If your catalytic converter has been stolen, you'll immediately notice a loud sound and altered vehicle performance upon startup. A failing catalytic converter may sound like someone shaking a box of rocks when your vehicle is idling when parked or stopped in traffic.
  • Exhaust leak -- Leaks can be caused by road conditions and rust. Because the muffler is mounted on the underside of your car, it is exposed to a lot of road conditions that can cause it to break down over time. The normal wear and tear that an exhaust system is exposed to means that older cars are especially vulnerable to leaks and should be inspected
  • Rust -- The water vapor produced by the catalytic convertor can also be problematic. When you only take your car for a short trip, the water vapor produced does not get expelled. So, it condenses back into water, which can cause rust. Sulfur is another by-product of engine emissions. If it mixes with water left in the exhaust system, it can form a corrosive acid that can eat away at the exhaust system.
Note to Remember: Before heading out on our summer road trip, be sure to have the exhaust system and muffler inspected along with the other systems of your vehicle.

Have a noisy muffler and need an inspection of your exhaust system? Car Tune-up Protect Your Investment!

This time of year, many people are cleaning garages, beautifying their yards, and re-painting their house to protect the investment they have made in their home. Don't forget about your automobile! Before heading out on a summer road trip, a wise driver will get their car ready for summer's hot temperatures by treating it to a tune up.

A car tune up consists of an inspection of the engine, an analysis of a vehicle's overall performance, and needed adjustments made to the operating systems. A tune up is both preventative and restorative maintenance. The age, mileage, and manufacturer's recommendations will determine the extent of the tune up (or maintenance service) for your specific vehicle.

If you are looking for Tune Up Billings MT than find our dedicated Auto Center Billings MT Services shop. Also find Auto Electrical Repair Billings MT to have safe driving.

What is inspected and serviced during a basic car tune up?

  • Spark plugs — the insulator firing noses should be light tan or gray. Any other color could be the sign of an engine problem. What color is the spark and is it properly igniting the fuel? Make sure the wires are not hard or cracked.
  • Fuel pump and filter – the filter should be clean and the pump should be functioning properly.
  • Fuel injectors -- dirt or other deposits can restrict the amount of fuel delivered to the engine so make sure there is no buildup of corrosion.
  • Timing -- the timing and idle can be adjusted as necessary.
  • PCV valve — it should not be clogged or leaking.
  • Points and condenser — they should be clean and operating properly.
A car tune up is not a one-size fits all service, but is based on the age of the vehicle, the number of miles driven, and the vehicle's maintenance history. If your vehicle still seems to have performance problems after a tune up, your auto technician can run an analysis of other engine components in addition to those listed above to pinpoint the problems.

Need expert advice on a tune up? Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Price's Precision auto shop today by calling (406) 248-2838, or go on-line to www.pricesprecisionauto.com for more information about a car tune up. Our Tech-Net professional auto repair shop in Billings, MT, also serves vehicle owners in the areas of Shepherd and Laurel, MT.

Pre-Trip Vehicle Check at your Auto Repair Shop.

Car problems on a long road trip can be a real hassle, not to mention expensive! Some people spend months planning their summer trips, but the thought of a roadside breakdown leaves them terrified. Scheduling a pre-trip vehicle check at a trustworthy auto repair shop can help avoid a breakdown, looking for an urgent auto repair while in a strange town.

If you are looking for dedicated Air Conditioner Repair Billings MT your search can be over now with our Price Precision Auto Repair Billings MT Shop. Also find our quality Transmission Service Billings MT for your car safety.

You can't guarantee that the unexpected flat tire or break-down won't happen, but your auto repair shop can help you be as prepared as possible before heading out on your road trip.  Check these out:
  • Check the tires for the correct air pressure, tread wear, and if there are any bulges and bald spots. Driving on under-inflated tires lowers fuel efficiency and also increases the risk of tire damage. Uneven wear indicates a need for a wheel alignment. Do you need to purchase new tires before your trip?
  • Check the hoses and belts as they can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or indicate signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering, and cooling system.
  • Check filters and fluids including motor oil, power steering, brake, and transmission fluids. Check the antifreeze/coolant mixture in the radiator, as well as the windshield washer solvent in the water reservoir.
  • Check the lights (both interior and exterior) so that you can see and be seen. Your auto repair shop can help you replace any burned-out bulbs.
  • Inspect wiper blades and replace if necessary so you can see clearly when driving during a summer rain storm.
  • Check the brakes to make sure you are not sliding through stop signs.
  • Check the battery to be sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.
  • A pre-trip Tune up will help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy.

Are Quality Oil Changes Worth the Cost?

No one wants to throw their money out the window! Some vehicle owners try to get by with lower quality oil changes believing they are saving money. They think that just because they aren't noticing problems, it isn't necessary to put out the dollars for a higher-quality oil change. In reality, using inferior oil can cause damage that may not be noticed until later down the road, costing more in the long run with engine problems. Many trustworthy auto repair shops offer oil change coupons to make regular oil changes more affordable for their customers.

If you are looking for expert Oil Changes Billings MT your search can be over now with our Price precision Mechanic Billings MT Shop. Also find Car Alignment Billings MT to keep your car up to date.
  • Why use high-quality motor oil? Good quality oil keeps contaminants separated and held in suspension. During an oil change, contaminants are drained out with the oil, rather than leaving them behind to create sludge. For maximum engine protection, it's worth the extra cost for a high quality, warranty-backed oil change. Regular oil changes ensure better lubrication for the protection and longevity of your engine.
  • Why not use inferior motor oil? Lower quality oil contributes to sludge build-up formed by a combination of dirt, soot, partially burned fuel, oxidized motor oil, leaked coolant and condensed water vapor produced during combustion. Inferior oil deposits harmful contaminants into the engine's lubricating system. Even before there are any visible symptoms of problems, damage may have already occurred, and the engine's performance level may not be brought back to normal.
  • Get a big return on your investment! For many people, a vehicle is one of the biggest purchases they may make (outside of a home). Keep your investment sound with regular oil changes. Your mechanic can check out the other systems of your vehicle for any other problems that may be looming.
Remember: The "rule of thumb" is to have an oil change service about every 3,000 miles, or every three months. Check your owner's manual or ask your auto mechanic for guidance on oil changes and other maintenance issues.

Looking for quality oil changes at affordable prices? Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Price's Precision auto repair shop today by calling (406) 248-2838, or go on-line to www.pricesprecisionauto.com for more information and to find our oil change coupons. Engine Repair What’s the Problem?

Finding out the source of engine problems covers a lot of territory. Most of your car is engine—made up of many systems that all work together to make your car run the way it should. If you have taken care of regular engine service, it will likely give you good service for many miles. However, if you start to notice strange sounds or smells, be sure to listen to what your engine is telling you. The best way to find the source of a problem is to observe the symptoms, then trace those symptoms to the most likely engine repair.

If you are looking for Engine Service Billings MT than find our dedicated Car Repair Billings MT Services shop. Also find Radiator Service Billings MT mechanic services to solve all your vehicle problems.

Key to Troubleshooting -- Observation

You know your car better than anyone else. This means that if it's making a sound or a smell that's not normal you will most likely notice something's awry. Many times a strange smell or sound is no big deal, but when you know that something is wrong these clues can be the key to proper troubleshooting. If you catch problems early enough you can avoid a lot of time and money on engine repair!

The following areas will come up during troubleshooting analysis. Look for these symptoms:

  • Misfiring or Surging -- The engine surges or misfires while moving. The engine seems to start fine and will normally accelerate fine. As you are driving and maintaining a steady speed, the engine seems to "speed up" slightly or it seems to miss and buck.
  • Hesitating -- When you step on the gas, the engine seems to bog down or takes a second to respond, along with a popping sound. You may notice a general lack of power, especially when the engine is hot or cold or when you are low on fuel.
  • Excessive Oil Consumption -- If everything is fine with your car's engine, there will be no need to add oil. However, as your engine starts to wear, oil makes its escape. A little oil added now and then is nothing to worry about, but if you're adding a quart or more between oil changes, look for professional engine repair. The piston rings are probably worn out and simply need to be replaced. Or it could be leaking oil due to a bad gasket or cracked part. This can be an expensive engine repair.
Tip to Remember: Regular engine service prevents major engine repair. Like the old adage says, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!"

Vehicle Maintenance Look In Your Trunk!

With the prices of automotive parts and labor going up in today's economy, many vehicle owners would like to know of some ways to save money on car maintenance. Most auto shops understand this and want to help their customers to be safe as possible—both in their driving and in car maintenance, while at the same time helping them save a few dollars in their budget.

If you are looking for quality Car Alignment Billings MT than find our dedicated Vehicle Maintenance Billings MT shop. Also meet our Muffler Billings MT mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

Here are a few simple car maintenance tools to keep in your trunk that could come in handy on a road trip:

  • Tire-Pressure Gauge — Flat tires are hazards for safety, so take a little extra time to check air pressure at least once a week and be sure they are at the right psi (pounds per square inch).
  • Shop Towels – Keep a supply handy in your trunk and also in your garage. They are useful for all kinds of spills and wipes, including spilled sodas, kid's hands, cleaning the oil dipstick, washing off the headlights or windows, or wiping grime off the windshield wipers.
  • Funnel -- This comes in handy when you need to top-off the oil, add water or coolant to the radiator, or add washer fluid to the water reservoir. Checking and topping-off fluids as necessary will save you expensive vehicle maintenance costs in the future.
  • Jack and lug wrench -- These are necessary if you get stranded out somewhere with a flat tire. Even if you're unable to change the tire yourself, you will have the tools for someone to help you out.
These four items will be useful in all sorts of situations. One final tip, make sure you have professional vehicle maintenance taken care of at the proper intervals so you can drive safely down the road.

Tire Balance and Tire Rotation Working Together.

Unbalanced tires can lead to uneven wear, excessive vibration while driving, and potentially unsafe driving conditions. A tire balance or tire rotation service will help to ensure that your tires are spinning around as evenly as possible, important for optimal driving performance. The daily wear and tear on your tires causes changes in the distribution of weight around the tire and wheel assembly.

If you are looking for quality Tire Balance Billings MT than find our dedicated Auto Repair Services Billings MT shop. Also meet our Oil Change Coupons Billings MT mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

• All About Tire Balance

A tire balance service consists of removing the tire and wheel to mount it on a balancing machine, spinning it around to make sure the weight of the wheel and tire are balanced evenly around the axle. The machine will detect any imbalance and a lead weight will be placed on the opposite side of the tire to compensate for weight differences. The tires and wheel are then remounted.

A tire balance service will:

  • Minimize any potential vibration felt in the steering wheel, seat, or floorboard
  • Enhance the stability of the drive-train components for smoother riding
  • Reduce tire wear and aid in proper tread-wear

How often should I have a tire balance service?

Based on wear or mileage, a good rule of thumb is to have a tire balance service every 3,000 - 6,000 miles, unless you are experiencing vibration at highway speed in the steering wheel, seat, floorboard, and if you are noticing scalloped/cupped wear patterns on your tires.

• All About Tire Rotation

The tires mounted on the drive wheels of any vehicle perform extra duty because they apply the power to the pavement. Rotating your tires means moving them from one side of the vehicle to the other, moving them from front to back, or a combination of both. A tire rotation service consists of removing the tires, inspecting the tread wear patterns, and then putting them back on where they will wear most evenly. If necessary, the tire-pressure monitors will be reset.

A tire rotation service will:

  • Prevent uneven tire wear
  • Maintain optimum driving performance
  • Maintain fuel efficiency.

How often should I have a tire rotation service?

Most vehicle manufacturers recommend that a tire rotation be performed about every 7,500 miles or six months, unless you drive fewer than about 7,500 miles per year. Your tires will last longer and drive strong with regular rotation, and could save you hundreds of dollars in new tires.

Does your vehicle needs a tire rotation service or just a tire balance? 4 Maintenance Tips for Your Car Battery.

Winter has past, and everyone is looking forward to warmer weather. Don't forget to take a look at your car battery. It's been through some tough times—freezing temperatures and icy conditions. To keep your vehicle running strong for smooth summer driving, consider the simple tips below for good car battery maintenance.

If you are looking for Car Battery Billings MT than find our dedicated Auto Center Billings MT Services shop. Also find Auto Electrical Repair Billings MT to have safe driving.

Avoid the inconvenience of a dead car battery on a busy school or work morning, or on a long-awaited road trip. If your car battery is more than five years old, all you may need is a simple car battery replacement to keep you going smoothly down the road.

4 Car Battery Maintenance Tips:

  1. Keep it clean. A dirty connection weakens the charge, so remove the clamps to clean away grease, dirt and oxidation. Keep the battery tray clean as well.
  2. Charge with solar. A solar charger can refill your battery's charge with solar energy for very little cost, and you will save money by preventing an urgent car battery replacement.
  3. Add water. To stretch the life of your car battery, you may need to add a little water occasionally. Be sure to use distilled water.
  4. Fasten it down. Make sure the battery sits correctly on the tray and is securely fastened. Battery acid spilling all over your motor is not a good thing!
A word to the wise: Don't get stranded by the side of the road! Keep your vehicle going strong with the appropriate automotive services and repair, including a necessary car battery replacement.

Car Service Center Advice Help Prevent Accidents!

Spring is here and with that, many people are starting to plan their summer road trips. There will be more vehicles than ever on the road, some in desperate need of car service or even more extensive car repair. As you make your plans for your summer road trip, be sure to have basic car service taken care of or any necessary car repair before getting out on the road.

If you are looking for Tire Rotation Billings MT than find our dedicated Car Service Billings MT Services shop. Also find Brake Pad Billings MT to have safe driving.

Consider these travel tips to make your road trip as safe as possible:

  • Don't drive drowsy -- Your risk of an accident while driving tired is similar to that when driving while intoxicated. Pull off the road in a safe place and take a quick nap or grab some caffeine.
  • Avoid distractions – Stay focused on the road and the vehicles around you so your brain has time to analyze and prepare for any dangerous situations. Pulling off the road to make that necessary call, sort out squabbling kids, or grabbing lunch, will make you a safer driver. If you absolutely have to make calls while on the road, invest in a Bluetooth device.
  • Allow extra space – Create a buffer zone between you and the car ahead (a car length for every 10 miles an hour) to allow time for quick braking. If other cars are uncomfortably close, line up with an empty space in a side lane so you have a place to steer your vehicle into if needed.
  • Keep your hands on the wheel -- When driving along boring stretches of road or in stop-and-go traffic, it's tempting to relax—maybe too much. Your hands should be on the steering wheel at all times.
  • Adapt to weather conditions -- Use proper judgment during bad weather—fog, rain storms, etc. Leave more room than usual between you and the car in front for extra stopping time and emergency manuevers.
  • Signaling other drivers – Make sure to use your turn signals well before you intend on turning or changing lanes. You can create a dangerous situation by maneuvering your vehicle unexpectedly.
  • Practice defensive driving -- Other drivers can be unpredictable. Avoid erratic driving--vehicles that drift across lanes, don't signal, or have difficulty maintaining a steady speed.
Now is the time to get ready for your summer road trip with quality car repair. Recognize the Signs of Failing Brakes?

Did you know that your vehicle's brakes are its most critical safety system? Regular brake service will ensure that your vehicle is operating as safe as possible with fully functioning brakes. You need to be confident that your vehicle will come to a complete and precise stop. Unfortunately, many drivers don't give the performance of their brakes much thought until they notice stopping problems. If this is the case, it is time for professional brake service as soon as possible.

If you are looking for quality Brakes Billings MT than find our dedicated Automotive Repair Billings MT shop. Also meet our Car Struts Billings MT mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

If you are concerned about the safety of your brakes, take the simple quiz below. Go for a short drive and pay attention to how your brakes perform when stepping on the brake pedal.
  • Do you keep traveling instead of stopping? Your brakes may need an adjustment, or possibly new linings.
  • Does your car pull to one side or the other when driving on a straight road? A stuck caliper and fluid leak can cause this problem on vehicles with front discs.
  • Does the pedal pulsate when you step on it? Your brakes may have overheated from overuse.
  • Does the steering wheel shake when you step on the brake pedal? The front discs need to be professionally machined or replaced.
  • Is there a squealing sound when you step on the brakes? There are several issues that can cause squealing brakes--the linings are worn and need to be replaced; the drum or disc needs to be machined; the front disc pads are loose or missing their anti-rattle clips; the hardware that attaches the calipers is worn; or the linings are of an inferior quality.
  • Do you hear a grinding noise when stepping on the brake pedal? Grinding brakes are caused by excessively worn linings, allowing the metal part of the pad or shoe to come in contact with the disc or drum. This can quickly ruin the most expensive mechanical parts of the brake system. Further driving can damage the discs or drums so stop driving immediately and have your vehicle towed to an auto shop.
  • Does your vehicle bounce up and down when stopping? The shock absorbers may need to be replaced.
  • Properly working brakes are essential to vehicle safety and reliability. Have a brake service at least once a year to keep them working as efficiently and effectively as originally designed.

Air Conditioner Service Survive Winter?

Did your heating and air conditioner unit survive winter?  After the freezing temperatures of winter, most people are ready to see the temperatures on the rise. Your heating/air conditioner unit had to work overtime during those cold days to keep you warm. Now, it's your turn to take care of your vehicle. Give it a little "TLC" with a needed air conditioner service. You may simply need to add fresh coolant to the radiator. Prevent an urgent air conditioner repair before the hot days of summer get here.

If you are looking for quality Air Conditioner Service Billings MT than find our dedicated Car Maintenance Billings MT shop. Also find Tune Up Billings MT replacement to have safe driving.

Because air conditioning repair is often very expensive, it is a huge concern for drivers. Since the advent of the A/C system in the 1940's, today's system has become more complex with computerized parts and the days of "do-it-yourself" air conditioner service is a thing of the past. Studies have proven the damaging effect of refrigerant to the ozone layer, and its production and use has been limited by law leading to strict environmental regulations governing air conditioning service. As a result, auto shops must use specialized equipment to ensure that harmful chemicals are contained during an air conditioner repair, and auto mechanics are required to be certified.

Basic knowledge of the A/C system is important. Here is a brief description of each component:

  • Compressor – Responsible for compressing and transferring refrigerant gas by a belt-driven pump fastened to the engine.
  • Condenser – Designed to radiate heat and is usually located in front of the radiator. Hot compressed gases flow through the condenser, where it cools, condenses, and exits out the bottom as a high pressure liquid.
  • Evaporator – The heat absorption component which removes the heat and humidity from the inside of your vehicle.
  • Pressure Regulator – Designed to sense the temperature and pressure, and regulate the refrigerant flow to the evaporator.
  • Metering Device – The primary function is to keep the gas and liquid separate, as well as remove moisture and debris.
We recommend scheduling an air conditioner service so that you can begin the warmer season worry-free when it comes to your car. Auto Shop Lingo

There are times when taking your vehicle to an auto shop that you are confused as to what the mechanic is actually going to do to your car. An unknown auto center can either make your auto repair a pleasant experience, or one that's not so pleasant. It is up to you as a vehicle owner to ask questions and make sure you understand the answers. When you understand auto shop "lingo," you and your mechanic can "speak the same language" relating to labor, warranty, parts, and repairs. You'll have fewer surprises with regard to cost, time, or the expected vehicle operation.

If you are looking for Muffler Billings MT than find our dedicated Auto Shop Billings MT Services shop. Also find Engine Rebuild Billings MT to have safe driving.

The next time you take your vehicle to an auto shop, here a few tips to help you communicate effectively with your auto mechanic:

  • Questions and Answers — Don't hesitate to ask your mechanic to explain things simply and in layman's terms. Your mechanic should also ask questions of you in order to obtain diagnostic information and to understand exactly how you would like to proceed with any car repair.
  • Take your time – Don't be in a hurry when talking with the mechanic and getting an exact diagnosis. An on-the-spot determination may be incorrect and waste both yours and the mechanic's valuable time.
  • Clear Instructions -- Make sure that your mechanic knows you want to be called before any actual work begins to apprise you of the problem, course of action, and the cost.
  • Be Available -- Leave a contact number so that the auto center can call you if there are any changes in repair plans.
  • Know the Policies -- Finally, make sure you understand the auto shop's policies in terms of labor rates, guarantees, warranties, and acceptable methods of payment.
Remember: The more questions you ask and understand before the actual work begins, the more satisfied you will be with the service to your vehicle.

Need a trustworthy auto center? Contact our ASE Certified Technicians today by calling (406) 248-2838, or go on-line to www.pricesprecisionauto.com for more information. Our Tech-Net professional auto shop in Billings, MT, also serves vehicle owners in the areas of Shepherd and Laurel, MT.

Exhaust System Needing an Upgrade?

The exhaust system is one of the key systems in relation to the overall performance of a vehicle. It is composed of tubing intended to expel exhaust gases away from the controlled combustion taking place inside your engine. It facilitates the removal of waste gases to streamline horsepower, gas mileage and the overall efficiency of your car or truck.

If you are looking for quality Exhaust Systems Billings MT than find our dedicated Transmission Fluid Change Billings MT shop. Also meet our Wheel Alignment Billings MT mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

The manufacturer's original mufflers and exhaust system components are intentionally manufactured to limit this process. Their primary intent is to stifle the noise created by your engine, which then of course, also reduces its efficiency. This explains why after-market mufflers and performance exhaust systems have been produced to be purchased and installed onto vehicles for those who "want a little more!"

There are several after-market manufacturers that produce similar products, yet, at the same time, they each have some unique features that distinguish one from the other. Depending on your needs and personal taste, these differences will definitely be important to you. Performance exhaust systems feature vehicle-enhancing components. These components provide an immediate boost to performance while also delivering the "rumble" that is virtually non-existent in stock parts.

Upgrading your vehicle's exhaust system is an easy way to dramatically improve the performance of your vehicle, and make an impression with your muffler. However, before making a final decision about to whether to upgrade your muffler and exhaust system or not, ask your auto service professional about the options available for your vehicle and to explain the pros and cons of each.

Need professional service for your muffler? Contact the ASE Certified Technicians at Precision Automotive today by calling (406) 248-2838, or go on-line to www.pricesprecisionauto.com for more information about the exhaust system. Radiator Service Check the Antifreeze!

It looks like freezing temperatures are here for awhile yet. Make sure your vehicle will make it through the last of winter's cold temperatures by scheduling a professional radiator service to check the level and mixture of antifreeze. This will ensure your vehicle will keep operating at optimum performance until spring comes with its warmer temperatures. Make sure the antifreeze is at its most effective mixture to avoid an urgent radiator repair.

If you are looking for Radiator Service Billings MT than find our dedicated Car Battery Billings MT shop. Meet our expert Oil Changes Billings MT for engine rebuilds service.

What is Antifreeze?

Radiators are normally filled with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze (usually green or red in color) and water. Antifreeze (also referred to as coolant) serves three main purposes:

  • Keeps the water in your radiator and engine from freezing in winter.
  • Keeps that same water from boiling over in the summer, and
  • Lubricates moving parts, such as the water pump.
The key chemical component in today's coolants is ethylene glycol. This chemical additive lowers the freezing point of a water-based liquid. When mixed correctly, radiator fluid generally won't freeze even if the temperature is less than 30 degrees below zero! It also keeps the same fluid from boiling at as much as 275 degrees F.

Maintain the effectiveness of Antifreeze:

Antifreeze periodically needs to be maintained and refreshed once it has been mixed with water and put into use. If the antifreeze leaks, boils, or if the cooling system has been drained and refilled, the freeze protection may have been compromised. In colder environments, more antifreeze and less water may be required. Most automotive manufacturers recommend periodic complete replacement of the antifreeze to renew corrosion inhibitors and remove accumulated contaminants.

Note:  Take care of a needed radiator service to prevent damage to your engine, resulting in major radiator repair.

Schedule a radiator service to check your vehicle's antifreeze protection! Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Price's Precision auto shop today by calling (406) 248-2838, or go on-line to www.pricesprecisionauto.com for more information about radiator repair.
